ZINSER'S GIANT MACRODON LANDS!

Contrary to what you might imagine in an exhibition called "Small Works: Art + Object" -this is the view of the gallery on opening night. The giant strange abstract cartoon character on the roof of Marty Walker Gallery is one of Billy Zinser's "MACRODONS", a blown-up version (pun intended) of the artist's small plastic art toys in the exhibition (also available online: www.macrodons.com). In addition to the small MACRODONS series 3 figures in the exhibition, Zinser transmogrified his thickly painted abstract forms of ambiguous objects into three-dimensional paintings, resulting in a mash-up between his playful plastic figures and free-standing sculptures of paint, reminiscent of his 2-D objects.

William Lamson's solo exhibition"Work and Trade" at Pierogi, Brooklyn, selected among ARTFORUM's "Critic's Picks", is reviewed in the latest issue. ARTFORUM contributor Michael Wilson describes Lamson's "Work and Trade" and "Automatic" (Lamson's Kite Drawing Apparatus and Automatic Kite Drawing appear above):

"Using simple homemade machines activated by natural forces, and initiating processes that revolve around found or bartered objects, Lamson juxtaposes the systematic with the random, questioning his own role as artist while maintaining an individual aesthetic."

Also on view is Lamson's two-channel 15 minute video "Hunt and Gather" (video stills, pictured below) in which Lamson performs urban interventions in NYC on his bicycle-ladder chimera, shooting down sneakers from power lines throughout the city with a bow and arrow and replacing them with the shoes he is wearing, thus preserving the original mark in the city's landscape, and by the redistribution of shoes creating a dialogue of nearly invisible actions and reactions.

WILLIAM LAMSON: WORK & TRADE

Opening reception tonite, Friday, May 29 at Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn, William Lamson's solo exhibition "Work and Trade" features projects in which the artist creates a mark-making system with a makeshift apparatus consisting of a ceiling fan, string, a balloon, and a marker, to create "automatic" drawings. Visitors are invited to offer Lamson a trade to be displayed in the gallery as part of the exhibition in exchange for a drawing of their choice. Among the trades is a cast dog skull, a Fabio CD, a watercolor painting, a MACRODON, and various other oddities. For further documentation of Lamson's trades, check out the "Work and Trade" blog.

Also on view is Lamson's "Automatic", a documentation of drawing projects made during Lamson's travels in South America that employ natural forces of wind and the ocean to power various makeshift drawing devices.
