JAY SHINN @ LUXPLUS

Jay Shinn, Scissor Square, 2011, light projection and paint
"Harmony, the appeal of colour and the potential of shaping space, or merely suggesting this, are characteristics common to both Axel Anklam and Jay Shinn's work. Although both artists work very differently in their approach, they complement each other remarkably well in this show. Both depend on light to achieve the desired effect." - Dr. Martin Steffens, kunsthistoriker

Opening August 19 in Berlin, artist Jay Shinn and German artist Axel Anklam present new work in the exhibition Luxplus at kunstraum t27, on view through September 18, 2011.

Poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's last words, "Luxplus," or "more light," describes the metaphysical experience presented by the two artists who, by using light, time, and innovative materials, create a strong sense of ethereal infinity. Jay Shinn continues to juxtapose perception with reality, creating imaginary spaces and textures, seeking to transcend material limitations. Shinn's luminescent objects are reminiscent of holograms and appear to float while also embodying a startling sense of three-dimensionality, while Anklam uses light through translucent materials, questioning the durability and elasticity of the object itself.

JAY SHINN FEATURED REVIEWS

The Houston Chronicle reviews Refuge, Jay Shinn's solo exhibition at Barbara Davis Gallery in Houston:
"The work's real power lies in the way it transforms the gallery into a serene, chapellike setting. The exhibition's title, Refuge, hints at a spiritual impulse behind the work, as does the interdependency between the objects and their setting, neither of which is complete without the other.

It all adds up to a less-is-more vision that draws on the legacy of minimalism but ultimately feels more generous than austere. But you need to experience the work in person to glean its impact." ~Douglas Britt

And in The Houston Press, "This kind of artful, elegantly restrained work is rare and welcome" writes Kelly Klaasmeyer, editor of Glasstire.com

JAY SHINN NEW WORK IN HOUSTON

Jay Shinn, Shattered X, 2010, light projection and paint on wall

Showing for the first time in Houston, artist Jay Shinn debuts his new work, Refuge, currently on exhibit at the Barbara Davis Gallery. The exhibition of steel sculpture, projected light, and framed works contemplate the ideas of reality and illusion through light and line, as seen in the image above.

Statement from the artist:
"Altering the light and surroundings provides for several images from one form. Through all of this, no one image is final. A semifinal stage is where my time with the work ends. The work continues its process." – Jay Shinn
Statement from the reviewers:
"Keep Shinn on your radar: His projected beams of light are redolent of early James Turrell, while his eloquent steel rods recall the precise attitude of late Marfa master Donald Judd. The resulting shadows are all about the future — moving beyond mere sculpture to evoke architecture." - Catherine Anspon, Paper City (click for full article)
