JAY SHINN talk @ ART LAB

JAY SHINN @ MARTY WALKER GALLERY

JAY SHINN
Bi-Slanted 01.052009, 2009
stainless steel, latex paint, 32 x 60 x 8 inches

Join us Thursday for a wine reception and artist talk with Jay Shinn & Joan Winter where the two artists will discuss their new work in the group show "ARCHITECTONIC", currently on exhibit at the Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas ART LAB gallery. The exhibition runs through July 9, 2009.

In this exhibition, artists explore issues central to the practice of architecture such as form, mass, volume, light and shadow, the interior vs. exterior, public vs. private, site-specificity, and making space active. What if those questions were answered by sculptures, installations, drawings, paintings, and videos? (excerpt, from ARCHITECTONIC press release, http://tinyurl.com/l2dgl9 -click for PDF)

MARK FLOOD in ATHENS

MARK FLOOD
Very Dry, 2008 (detail)
collage - paper on coroplast mounted on plywood
(dimensions vary with wood backing installation)

Mark Flood exhibition now on view @ Peres Projects, REMAP KM, Athens, Greece.

From the press release for the exhibition:
In "Additional Paintings" the two-person show with Mark Flood and John Kleckner, never has defacement been so unabashedly stabby and consumer-culture critical as with Houston-based artist Mark Flood, nor as minutely crafted as with the Berlin-based American artist John Kleckner. Mischief-maker, identities specialist and sub-lingual alchemist Mark Flood layers various media and signs to render their meaning highly problematic, often ascorbic, sometimes bitingly astute; street signs are literally defaced with phrases, often consciously misspelled, that speak to the deepest subconscious desires of humans and consumers; celebrity posters mangled to leave little recognizable in these public icons.

"Additional Paintings" opens Tuesday, June 16, 5:30-9:30pm, and runs through July 27, 2009. REMAP KM - www.remapkm.org - Leonidou 15, Keramikos, Athens, Greece.

In addition Marty Walker Gallery is fortunate enough to have a few available lace paintings by Mark Flood, for further information or to schedule an appointment to view the work, please contact us. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 11-5pm.

"Beau Comeaux's nighttime photograph (Kudzu, 2007) of a cluster of trees overtaken by kudzu was a standout, with it's yellow light, purple sky and clarity of detail creating an eerily artificial scene." -Frances Colpitt, Art in America

THIS JUST IN! Brand new photos by Beau Comeaux can now be previewed in the gallery (see below), stop by, or contact us for more info and to see the work.

WILLIAM LAMSON in ARTFORUM: "CRITIC'S PICK"

WILLIAM LAMSON WORK AND TRADE "...the show fuses abstract and documentary images in an entertaining take on strategies with roots in Dada, process art, and hobbyist gadgetry." -ARTFORUM

William Lamson's solo exhibition"Work and Trade" at Pierogi, Brooklyn, selected among ARTFORUM's "Critic's Picks", is reviewed in the latest issue. ARTFORUM contributor Michael Wilson describes Lamson's "Work and Trade" and "Automatic" (Lamson's Kite Drawing Apparatus and Automatic Kite Drawing appear above):
"Using simple homemade machines activated by natural forces, and initiating processes that revolve around found or bartered objects, Lamson juxtaposes the systematic with the random, questioning his own role as artist while maintaining an individual aesthetic."

Also on view is Lamson's two-channel 15 minute video "Hunt and Gather" (video stills, pictured below) in which Lamson performs urban interventions in NYC on his bicycle-ladder chimera, shooting down sneakers from power lines throughout the city with a bow and arrow and replacing them with the shoes he is wearing, thus preserving the original mark in the city's landscape, and by the redistribution of shoes creating a dialogue of nearly invisible actions and reactions.

The New York Times reviews Mark Flood's newest solo exhibition "Chelsea Whores" at Zach Feuer in New York, with this to say about Flood's lace paintings:
"Mr. Flood also makes traditional works by applying paint over old lace and then pulling away the cloth, leaving intricate, multihued, all-over patterns that are visually absorbing if not revolutionary." -Ken Johnson, New York Times
