WILLIAM LAMSON at IMA **UPDATED**

Lamson during performance at the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion,
Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana, April 7, 2011

Indianapolis Art Museum celebrates artist William Lamson's Divining Meteorology radio tower installation currently on exhibit in the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion.

Lamson extensively explored the tower's sound-making possibilities with unconventional audio devices in his studio in Brooklyn, then transported and installed the piece at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, giving a sound performance during his artist talk on April 7.

The combination of tower engineering, radio waves, and sound-generating devices "make apparent the unseen forces that surround us, as a radio signal (also linked with the weather) is made audible and tactile through the vibrations in the tower," Amanda York of Indianapolis Museum of Art (link to full article).

MODERN RUIN -a strange and spectacular two-day art event

MODERN RUIN

MODERN RUIN -PRESS RELEASE:

On Thursday, September 25, 2008 the U.S. Government took over Washington Mutual, selling most of it to JPMorgan Chase.

Roughly a year earlier, at the height of a frenzied economic bubble, Washington Mutual began building a new 1 million dollar branch at 5030 Greenville Avenue, just south of Lovers Lane. Just after its completion, the government seized WaMu, and JPMorgan Chase decided not to occupy the building.

The new building was never opened, never used, and has sat as an empty shell for more than a year.

On February 20, 2010, *Modern Ruin*--a two-day exhibition organized by Christina Rees and Thomas Feulmer--will open. The two-day exhibition will be the only use for the million-dollar building before the demolition process begins the following week. The bank building is a truly modern ruin - a building that never met its purpose, and only existed as potential activity, potential economy, and hoped-for growth.

Seeking to take advantage of the space--its social and cultural connotations, its materials, and its presence as direct and immediate evidence of the current economic condition--15 artists will create work inspired by and in dialogue with the building. Some artists will alter the building's materials and corporate interior, while others will stage actions and interventions within, and still others will use the background of the space as context for their work.

Artists in the exhibition are:

Frances Bagley
Tim Best
Michael Corris
Thomas Feulmer
Annette Lawrence
M
Margaret Meehan
Tom Orr
Richard Patterson
Cam Schoepp
Noah Simblist
Christoph Trendel
Terri Thornton
Kevin Todora
Jeff Zilm

Please join us for the opening reception/intervention with the artists the night of Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, 8-11pm. The exhibition will be open to the public on February 20th and 21st, 12-5pm, though in the case of some artists the work left behind will be documentation of the actions that took place the night before.

WILLIAM LAMSON and the NBA (?)

WILLIAM LAMSON

William Lamson: LONG SHOT

September 12, 2009 - January 2010
The Lot Public Opening: Saturday, September 12th
Pick-up basketball game, The Lot: 2–6PM
(food and drink on site - MAP)

William Lamson has installed basketball backboards and hoops enlarged 2.5 times to the scale of The Lot's 25-foot high rigger poles. The poles define the perimeter of the 90’ x 90’ site and the interior open gravel plaza of about 20’ x 40’. The result is the creation of a miniature basketball court of massive proportions. Artspace will provide basketballs to anyone who wishes to use the court through an exchange program with the gallery. You can use your own balls too - please play an enjoy!

The Lot is an 8,000 square foot pocket park located in downtown New Haven, CT [MAP]. Situated between two highly trafficked streets in the historic and culturally diverse Ninth Square neighborhood, this formerly derelict parking lot was redeveloped in 2005 as a public transit site and green space for communal use. LONG SHOT continues in Artspace’s tradition of expanding opportunities for public art and commitment to community. Lamson’s basketball court will create a function for The Lot's underused space, promoting play, community interactions, and physical exercise; it will also activate an otherwise dormant, unkempt area.

LONG SHOT will complement Lamson's solo exhibition at Artspace in November 2009.

The Lot is located on 812 Chapel Street, New Haven, CT -see map
